L2M - SURROUND SOUND

5.1 & 7.1 LINK FUNCTION

The L2M is surround sound compatible. Three units can be linked to provide six or eight channels of synchronized operation.

APPLICATION

The Requisite L2M has provisions for the interconnection of the optical attenuators to provide equal gain reduction in 5.1 and 7.1 applications. The Peak Reduction of each channel can be made equal, regardless of which channel is instigating limiting or expansion.

THEORY OF OPERATION

For multi-channel applications, a portion of the input signal is fed through the gain reduction control to the (12AX7LPS) control amplifier. The control voltage is applied through the "Stereo Cal" adjustment to the lamp-driver (6AQ5A) amplifier and connected to the two 1/4" "Link" jacks which appear on the rear of the chassis. This stage provides the necessary voltage to operate the electroluminescent light source.

As a result of all units being connected in tandem, via the link jacks, a gain-reduction control voltage generated in any channel will cause equal gain reduction in all units. In other words, any channel experiencing the highest peak becomes the master for that peak and all channels will track in a like manner.

CONNECTION

For 5.1 operation (linked mode), the "link" jack is connected to the corresponding link jack on an identical L2M and the second link jack on that unit is connected to an additional L2M, at this point the control voltage becomes common to all three units. For 7.1 applications connect a forth L2M in the same manner as above. Set the "Sep/Link" switch (found on the front panel) to the down "Link" position on all units.

CALIBRATION

For proper operation in the linked mode to occur, calibration between the units is required. Instructions for 5.1 and 7.1 calibration can be found in the User's Manual on page 13. Once calibration has been set, the units will retain their settings without experiencing significant drift. Occasional confirmation of calibration is suggested.
